BRITAIN
THE FIRST WESTERN TOTALITARIAN POLICE STATE?

People think that civil rights exist to protect them but governments see them as obstacles to be overcome

Civil rights in Britain are being eroded by the state at an ever increasing rate and today's state is becoming more oppressive and intrusive by the day. Surely England is the front runner in the race to become the first police state in Europe. Those people who have read "1984" and "Animal Farm" will recognize the governments tone in it's new "public information" messages on TV. Watching the Car tax, Benefit & TV licence adverts is a revelation and clearly demonstrates the attitude of the government toward the people. I mean, how "Big Brother" can they get? Threats, either implied or explicit are the messages of today (government letters are invariably designed to be intimidating) and the message that we are all being watched and monitored is being made loud and clear. Technology has opened the door for government to monitor many more aspects of our everyday lives and they have embraced it eagerly. If you've ever wondered how they know about your bank accounts, it's because they are now cross referenced with your National Insurance Number. We should never forget that government is all about control and, these days, profit. It's almost like the government is actively trying to alienate itself from the people, who now take a poor second place to finance. The UK government these days is more like a business enterprise than ever, simply another big conglomerate and should be treated as such. Like your bank it is not, in fact, your friend and should be treated with caution and wariness.

Just to cap it all, they now want to introduce ID cards under the pretext that it will help combat "terrorism", the new buzz word being used to justify further erosion of civil rights, and not just in the UK. Putting the people in fear and panic, whether justified or not, gives the state virtual carte blanche to impose new legislation and restrictions upon the population because, as history has shown, a population in fear is easier to manipulate.

It seems to us that a civilized society should provide at least two services that it's citizens have full & free access too, namely a good health service and education. Both of which have worked as such in the past but no longer do since politicians began interfering and bean counters were put in charge. Standards are now so low as to make NHS hospitals dangerous places to be and education standards so laughable that virtually everyone does well, just to make the governments statistics (which are are massaged regularly) look good. Standards are now so low that one can't help but snigger at the governments attempts to reassure us that everything is, in fact better than ever. In England people are now actually very wary about going into an NHS hospital because they know it is hazardous to their health (apparently 2000 people died in 2005 as a result of hospital blunders and mistakes, let alone those who died as a result of picking up an infection such as MRSA) and people openly laugh each year when the new exam results are released. NO ONE IS FOOLED, we know standards have fallen dramatically to absurdly low levels.

So when did the state stop caring, start isolating itself and alienating the public? Just when did it start seeing joe public as a source of easy revenue (poll tax, speed cameras etc.) without due consent? It has to be when that woman got control in the 80's and sold virtually all the family silver. She initiated the move from social welfare to profiteering and destroyed the trade unions. Why we give power to those who seek power is beyond us, surely it's the most stupid thing to do, has histrory taught us nothing. Given that, theoretically tax payers are no longer supporting nationalised industries such as rail, coal, oil etc. where has all the surplus money gone? Certainly not into education, NHS or even the roads for which the UK has the ridiculous and extremely unfair Road Tax. It is no wonder that the face of the state, the police and law enforcement, has lost the respect of the common people and are seen by many as foe rather than friend.

Unlike the 60's & 70's, there is now virtually nothing to choose between the parties in the UK and so apathy has set in amongst the population. In fact the government is so concerned about poor turnout for elections that there has been a proposal to reduce the voting age to 16, how this will remedy the problem, how many 16 year olds really know enough to make a voting judgement. Whereas in the 60's & 70's people cared and voiced their concerns and wishes (check the newsreels) nowadays most of the population is busy just trying to survive and have become disillusioned with politics. Let us not forget that most of us are not only in debt but actively encouraged to be in more debt, leaving little time for anything other than trying to get by. Could it be that a population in debt is easier to control? The young generation, once so outspoken and opinionated are now only concerned with getting pissed, shopping and enjoying themselves. No surprise perhaps when you consider that the pressures upon them to succeed, these days, are so severe, especially when success is measured by material acquisition.

Come on you Brits, revolt against this encroaching tyranny, don't sit back doing nothing. We're tired of hearing that old arguement that goes: "If you're not going to do anything wrong why worry about all this new legislation", this is such a bogus arguement, completely missing the point and simply allows the government to progressively get away with more and more, insidiously reducing civil liberties bit by bit in the face of public apathy, under the guise of, for example, fighting terrorism.

Check out the the tone of UK governments public information ads (more to come I'm sure)
